JOB GOAL:

 

In concert with the building principal and the athletic director, the varsity football coach supervises, coordinates, and promotes all phases of the interscholastic football program.  As with all coaches, the Varsity Head Football Coach is directly responsible to and works in close association with the building principal and athletic director.  Specific details (checklists and guidelines) will be provided by the athletic director.

 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Recommends candidates for assistant coaching vacancies, assigns, orients, and provides continuous instruction to them in their duties.

 

• Evaluates assistant coaches at the close of each season and submits a report to the building principal and the athletic director.

 

• Submits final reports on season records, season evaluation of assistant coaches to the building principal and the athletic director.

 

• Determines, plans, and directs the offensive and defensive systems to be used at all levels of football in the school district.

 

• Plans post-season and pre-season conditional programs.

 

• Develops objectives prior to the season designed to meet specific needs of the total football program, and plans practices so adequate time is allotted for all phases of football.  These objectives and plans are to be shared with and assigned to specific assistant coaches.

 

• Designs and supervises practices to teach individual skills and fundamentals and total team coordination.

 

• Devotes all necessary time for practice sessions and games; responsible for the well-being of all athletes.

 

• Works in association with the athletic director concerning budgeting, equipment, scheduling, transportation accommodations, and building and grounds facilities.

 

• Orders new supplies and equipment through the athletic director, cares for, issues and collects all equipment, inventories and prepares used equipment for reconditioning.

 

• Supervises physical examinations, distributes and collects insurance forms and parent permission forms.

 

• Counsels athletes concerning future endeavors, including selection of institutions of higher learning and obtaining scholarships.  Individually counsels players whose attitude, behavior or performance is unsatisfactory.  Plans and presents discussions which will motive players to compete in a manner that reflects a positive image of the Penn Hills School District.  Demonstrates a behavior and demeanor which will serve as an appropriate model for young adults.

 

• Promotes good human relations within the Penn Hills School District student body and faculty; extends this same effort into the community in order to have a blended school-community spirit.

 

• Establishes training rules that are conducive to individual and team success, considering at all times the welfare of the individual, but uppermost the welfare of the entire team and the school district.  These guidelines must be presented at the beginning of the season.

 

• Strives to improve coaching skills and techniques and to promote this attitude among assistants, through publications, clinics, conferences and visits to schools and colleges.

 

• Runs a follow up on any injury or accident to a player concerning insurance, time lost from school, and general welfare.

 

• Instructs players in rules and rule changes.

 

• Compiles eligibility lists required by the P.I.A.A. and submits them promptly to the athletic director.

 

• Works with the athletic director and the public relations coordinator to establish a public relations program to promote the football program in the community; prepares and reports news releases concerning the football program to all local newspapers, and completes public address announcements for in-school communications.

 

• Secures building permits for use of athletic fields and gymnasiums.

 

• Determines standards for varsity letter winners that are consistent with school policy.

 

• Nominates football candidate for All-Conference and All W.P.I.A.L. honors.

 

• Remains cognizant of and maintains practices and policies consistent with P.I.A.A. and W.P.I.A.L. regulations.

 

• Directs the selection and instruction of student managers, and student statisticians.

 

• Conducts other duties as assigned by the athletic director and the building principal, director of secondary education and the superintendent of schools.

 

• Carefully reviews all elements of this job description and provides an opportunity for members of the football coaching staff to clarify their roles and responsibilities with each other.  Supervises all assistants to implement the elements of their job descriptions.

 

• Promotes all student athletes in the recruiting process.  This includes developing highlight tapes for all players interested in moving on to the next level.

 

• Inform all players and parents about the NCAA Clearinghouse and how this affects the recruiting process.

 

• Foster an environment of sportsmanship, teamwork, and personal growth

 

• Promote athletic achievement and life skills through experiential learning

 

• Collaborate with faculty, staff, and administration to support student success

 

• Monitor and support the academic progress of all players

 

• Enforce participation in study tables/tutorial support, regardless of academic standing

 

• Maintain eligibility and intervene proactively when concerns arise
